On 24 October 2011 in Beijing, a publication launch for Canada-China Minorities, Migration and Cities was organized by CSC of CASS/IEA and China Research Center of Minority Studies at the Minzu University of China. Mr. Mark McDowell, Counselor of Public Affairs of Canadian Embassy in Beijing, addressed his speech at this event.
Counselor McDowell congratulated to the new publication and thought that the performance of Canada greatly depends on cooperation with China. He said, “I think this activity is a good template for us to undertake more collaborative tasks with China. The purpose of our coming to China is to establish different exchanges, for example, how to tackle the concrete issues of aboriginal people and minority groups. I am particularly interested in hearing your insightful ideas and practical discussions. Although China and Canada are different countries, the two countries do face lots of same challenges. For example, both countries need to carefully think about how to deal with ethnic relations. The Canadian embassy greatly concerns about the particular minority group ‘Aboriginal inhabitants’. Our exchange programs are not limited within cultural exchange and education exchange. For example, last night I had dinner with a group of aboriginal leaders from BC. They came to China to focus on investments and economic development issues. Some participants come to China to have an academic conference in Chengdu on Wednesday. A few of them are going to visit Beichuan on Thursday. In brief, Canada and China cooperate with each other on many aspects, such as environmental protections, language preservation, reconstruction after disasters and so on. I think today’s topic about aboriginal inhabitants is of great value.”
Canada-China Minorities, Migration and Cities, edited by Dr. Jack Jedwab, Executive Director of the Association for Canadian Studies(ACS) in Montreal and Prof. Du Fachun from CASS, was published in Canada by Canadian Diversity, Summer 2011, Vol 8:6, a publication of the ACS.

=>2.  Academic Lectures and Photo Exhibition: Canadian Studies Activities Conducted by School of Foreign Languages, HIT

The third academic lectures, commemorating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Canadian Study Center, was successfully held by the School of Foreign Languages, HIT on the afternoon of October 21st, 2011. The speeches were given by Doctor Huang Furong and Professor, Doctor Liu Kedong, who presented thorough and insightful analyses of the works of Canadian woman writer Alice Munro and Thomas King respectively. The academic activity also drew attendance of the students and teachers from the school.
Doctor Huang Furong began with the brief introduction of Alice Munro’s works and relevant researches on them, and then with a profound investigation of its theme of death. She thinks that with a unique feminist style and exquisite plain texture, the Canadian author conveys a calm attitude toward death and the dignity of death ritual to the readers. Doctor Huang concluded her speech with a discussion of the characteristic of death theme, based on the texts from Monroe’s novels.
Afterwards, Professor Liu Kedong shifted to the multi-culture of Canada, then introduced Canadian-Chinese literature and Aboriginal literature, and eventually landed on the themes of the aboriginal’s claims of their ancestral land, as well as the attitudes of the Indians toward the tradition and the mainstream culture. Professor Liu specified his points and understanding with analysis of the aboriginal writer Thomas King as well as the text of his novel “Borders”. He believes that Thomas King deconstructs the political, racial boundaries by making the “Mum” in his novel stick to her own Blackfoot identity, so as to reiterate the indigenous people’s rights; claims a victory of cultural confrontation by dampening the stereotype of cowboy’s images with discourse confrontations and skillful manipulation of media; and successfully maintains and preserves the aboriginal tradition by cracking the myths of the United States with the children exposed to and immersed in the United States metropolises.
The lectures, with splendid visual aids, was applauded among the faculties and students, whose interests in Canadian literature and Aboriginal literature were aroused and, most importantly, whose research scales were remarkably broadened.
The fourth academic lectures, presided by the vice president of school Ms. Liu Xiaodan, was given by Professor Li Jiehong and Associate Professor Zheng Shuming on the afternoon of November 4th, 2011.
Doctor and Professor Li Jiehong (also as a graduate adviser), obtained her degree of PhD on English Linguistic and Literature in Shanghai Foreign Languages University. She went to Toronto University as a visiting scholar, funded by Sino-Canadian Cultural Exchange project in 1997. In her report entitled “Canadian Media Literacy Education and its Enlightenment”, she expounds the definition, the basic theories and the course orientations of Canadian Media Literacy Education. She further investigates the social and the historical factors accounting for its development. She holds that there are exterior factors, such as resistance of the erosion of the American culture, and cultivation of an independent Canadian constitution; there also exist interior factors, such as multi-cultural movements and ethnic recognition. She points out that the enlightenments from the Education will make people vigilant of the “invasion” of Korean or Japanese culture, the consumerism, idolatry, one-voiced public opinion, and false information. She also insists that the education of humanity be the hard core in Chinese foreign language teaching.
Mr. Zheng Shuming, associate professor in the school of foreign languages and graduate adviser, is studying for a PhD degree in translation in Shanghai Foreign Languages University. He went to The College of Translation, Toronto University as a visiting scholar, funded by Chinese Foundation for Studying Abroad, and has published more than 50 papers. In his lecture entitled “The Profile of Canadian Teaching and Research of Translation”, Mr. Zheng gives a systemic introduction of the constitution of the Canadian Translation Departments, the setups of the courses, the development of majors and corresponding employment orientations, and the experts of the fields and their research focuses, (including the research on history of translation, the theory of feminism translation, translation and cross-culture study, machine translation), the periodicals of Canadian translation, the community as well as the business of Canadian translation. His report primarily serves as a platform from which the faculties and the students can broaden their vision, helps shed light on the teaching and research on Canadian translation, and also will definitely inspire those responsible for the establishment and the development of the academic degree awarding in translation.
Great interests were aroused among the faculties and the students present by the lecturers' impressive info-loaded speeches and their eloquence, and the listeners were greatly convinced that the two research fields in question deserved further attention and involvements from them.
In mid-November, a Canadian picture show, held by HIT Foreign Languages School, was on. Some teachers shared with us their pictures taken from Canada and some with the pictures of Canadian buildings and scenery they found on line. It’s a good way for us to know more about Canada.

=>2.  SISU Welcome Canadian Historian Stephen Endicott and His Family

The Center of Canadian Studies, Sichuan International Studies University (SISU) welcomed Canadian historian and great friend of Chinese people Prof. Stephen Endicott
  Vice-President Li Xiaochuan, Consul M. Lindsay, Director      with his  P. Liao, Prof. Lan Renzhe and Canadianists with the Endicotts      family to come to Chongqing for a visit on August 16 and 17. The visit was also an opportunity for Stephen to pass on the family tradition to the younger generations to continue the long standing friendship with Chinese people, for Stephen was born in Shanghai, China and grew up in Luoshan, Sichuan and Chongqing, the second son of well-known peace activist James G. Endicott. Members of the Center, SISU joint the Endicotts for the tour of historical spots in Chongqing where Stephen spent his childhood when he was in China in the 1920s and 1903s.

The cherishing memories have brought Stephen back to China many time since his family left the country in late 1930s. The most appreciatedand productive trip         was  in 1981 when he and his wife came to work in Sichuan University and also carried out a thorough survey in Shifang, Sichuan to find out the truth of rural area in China.Prof. Lan presents Photo Album to the Endicotts With that Stephen wrote a book The Red Earth to introduce to the Western world about the People’s Republic of China, and gained himself international fame. His elder brother, Norman Endicott, used to work in SISU as a foreign expert, who is also a good-will ambassador for the Sino-Canadian friendship and the understanding of the two peoples. They both have done a great deal for the development of the relationship and academic exchanges of the two peoples, and established very close and intimate relationships with Chinese scholars, among whom is Prof. Lan Renzhe, former President of ACSC and President of SISU. They have  been knowing each Stephen leads the tour to Wenfeng Pagoda   other and kept a close exchange tie for many years..

During the two-day visit, the members of Centre and the Endicotts did very interesting historical tracing walks to the various sites where the family ancestors left their foot prints. These include Jingyi Middle School (now Chongqing No. 11 Middle School) that was built by Stephen’s father and other Canadian Missionaries, the old building in No. 5 Hospital where Stephen and his family used to live. The group also took long walks to Longmenhao, Wenfeng Pagoda, Yaerdang, and Danzishi where young Stephen left his sweet childhood memories and    Chen Xiaoying, Acting Director of Center receiving warm feelings for his      books from Orion, Grandson of Stephen Endicott        Chinese play-mates. While walking Stephen initiated talks in Chongqing local dialect with people he met and discussed the changes brought by these years. Then he would relate very vivid  anecdotes of the old days to his children, grandchildren and us Canadianists. When the group went passing the Yangzi River Bridge, Stephen pointed at the grand sceneries of the River and the island and started reading the poems his mother wrote when she was there enjoying the same sights many years ago. Listening to Stephen, all the Dr. Yang Shaolin, Center Member gives gifts in return     members in the group were overwhelmed by the poems and the imaginations inspired by this extraordinary experience. The Edicotts also enjoyed the visits to Ciqikou, a well-kept old town for tourism, Zhazidong Prison before 1949, and the Exhibition of Sino-American Cooperation in 1940s.

In the afternoon of 17, after the tour around the campus in SISU, and the Exhibition of Scholl History, the Endicott visited the Center of Canadian Studies with great interests and gave a very lovely  presentation of books, CDs and other valuable presents for Canadian Studies and Endicott studies to the Center. In return, the Center presented small tokens of SISU   Specials to the          Vice-President Li Xiaohcuan presents his painting guests to extend thanks and Nicholas Keresztesi, son-in-law of Stephen receives appreciations.  The visit and the presentations from the Endicotts are great gifts. They are very valuable for studies and better understanding of the three generations in the Endicott family, who spent long time with Chinese people in those most difficult times from the Opium War to the Anti-Japanese War, and who have made great contributions for the world to learn about the new China. Their coming in August shall again contribute to the development and continuity of the Sino-Canadian friendship   and cademic exchanges. The visit will  also push  to a new stage of  the work in the Center of         The Endicotts and Canadianists          Canadian Studies in SISU.               visited Jingyi Middle School

=>3.  Two Canadian Scholars Delivered Speeches at Liaoning Normal University

Invited by Dr. Wang Bing, director of Canadian Studies Center at Liaoning Normal University, two Canadian scholars, Dr. Li Xuemei and Dr. James Scott Johnston, came to Liaoning Normal University and delivered two speeches to some teachers and students from School of Foreign Languages, at the International Conference Hall on Sept. 1, 2011. As one of the series of academic events recently held by our university, this activity was organized to mark the founding of Liaoning Normal University for 60 years.
Dr. Li Xuemei is an associate professor from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. Her research interests cover ESL, comparative studies in education, cultural identity and accommodation, etc. Her speech was entitled Identity Mediation across Cultures: International Students in China. Dr. Li first identified several key terms and then went on
       Dr. Li Xuemai giving the lecture              to introduce one empirical study conducted by her lately. In her research, she used six international students who are studying Chinese in Shanghai as participants, analyzing their cultural identity and the role of language power. To do the research, she adopted interview, questionnaire, emails, face-to-face talk, and follow-up letters as instruments. She further illustrated the relationship between “mediated culture”, “additional culture”, and “home culture”. She also offered suggestions to foreign language teachers and students, which aroused the audience’s much attention and interest.
Dr. James Scott Johnston comes from Queen’s University, Canada. His speech is named Dewey in China—— Lesson for Democracy. In his speech, Dr. Johnston utilized many invaluable letters that John Dewey wrote to America around May 4th Movement of China. All these letters were concerned about democracy and democratic living in China. Dr. Johnston drew a conclusion from Dewey’s writings that democracy means China’s own development, not from outside, which is still beneficial to China today when we are constructing a harmonious society.
During the Q-A session, two Canadian scholars answered the questions put forward by the audience, which led to in-depth discussions on cultural identity and Dewey’s democratic thoughts for Chinese education today. In the end, some photos were taken to   Dr.Johnston,Dr. Li Xuemei and teachers observe the event.
This academic event played a significant role in enhancing the relations between Canadian and Chinese scholars, widening the horizon of our teachers and students, and uplifting the overall academic standard of school of foreign languages. This activity was sponsored by Canadian government and the Division of Scientific Research of LNU, and we express our gratitude to them!

=>4.   OLLOQUE DE L'AFEC 2012

7. In her speech, Ms. Wang Li made positive comments on the work of ACSC and further expressed hopes for ACSC in the future on behalf of Canadian Embassy.
8. All participants discussed selection of ACSC’s second round of award for excellence in Canadian Studies next year, meeting of Executive Committee and all directors of Canadian Studies centers, and the revision of ACSC’s regulations. A tentative consensus was reached among all members present.

=>2. Call for papers

The Center of Canadian Studies at Sichuan International Studies University (SISU) has been working under the ACSC’s suggestion to start a special column for Canadian Studies in Foreign Language and Literature, an academic journal of Sichuan International Studies University. Thanks to the understanding and supports of both the school authority and the chief editor, the Column has finally come into being and we call for papers now. Canadianists, and scholars of all academic fields are requested to kindly submit papers to the Column and help with the development of Canadian Studies in China.
The process for paper review and publication goes as follows: papers should be sent to the Column Panel (E-mail: jypaper2011@126.com ) for review and selection first, and the paper selected shall be forwarded to the editor of Foreign Language and Literature, where the author is notified for the acceptance and publication of his/her paper.
Due to the academic preference of Foreign Language and Literature, papers related to Canadian Studies with perspectives in language, literature, culture, education and language teaching are given more credits and have a better chance for publication. We are expecting good papers from all in Canadian Studies academe and we would like to repeat the E-mail address for paper submission: E-mail: jypaper2011@126.com
 Please also send “mobile text” to 13206148896 to notify the submission.
