Entrusted by Mr. Liu Honglin, editor in chief of the journal, Prof. Zhao Qingqing, member of Canadian Studies Centre of Nanjing University, is in charge of soliciting the contributions. Prof. Zhao is also a member and liaison person of the Chinese Canadian Writers' Association and Chinese Pen Society of Canada. The issue will be published in 2010. 加拿大驻华使馆目前正在为2010年度“加拿大研究专项奖”寻找合适的候选人。创立于1989年的“加拿大研究专项奖”为中国学者提供一个在加拿大进行为期5周的访问机会。在加拿大期间,中国学者将参观、访问加拿大高等院校和科研机构,会见加拿大学者,收集相关资料,进行各自的项目研究。回国后,获得奖学金的学者将要 拟申请者见附件中 2010年度“加拿大研究专项奖”的中文项目介绍和英文申请表格。 (中国加拿大研究会秘书处报道) Canadian Embassy in Beijing is now looking for the proper candidates for the 2010 Special Award for Canadian Studies. Launched in 1989 the Award is to provide a chance for Chinese scholars to pay a five-week visit to Canada. During the period they will visit Canadian universities and research institutions, meet Canadian scholars, collect information needed and undertake their research projects. After coming back to China, they are expected to teach courses or publish articles and books on Canadian studies or conduct related research so as to promote Canadian studies in China. The book “Catcher, Self-Consciousness, Comparison——Educational Studies of Indigenous People and Nationalities” compiled by Dr Chen Bateer from the Canadian Studies Center of Nankai University and Dr Peter. Englert from University of Hawaii, was published by Central University for Nationalities January, 2009 in China while It was regarded as the Educational Ethnological Series of “211 project” of Central University for Nationalities. His Canadian Study papers such as “on the Education of Aboriginal People in Canada before Confederation-Take the Indian as the Case”, “Anthropological Rethink on the Aboriginal Culture in Canada”, “On the Developmental Model of Higher Education for Ethnic Minority Groups between China and Canada: Take the Central University for Nationalities in China and the First Nations University in Canada as Cases”, and his student, Hanwei’s master dissertation “On the Movement of ‘Indian Control of Indian Education’ in Canada” were put into the third part of the book which named “Compariosn and Experiences: Education of Indigenous People and Nationalities from abroad”. The book “Sharing, Understanding, Collaboration, Development-Higher Educational Studies of Indigenous People and Nationalities in Asia-Pacific” edited by Dr Chen Bateer from the Canadian Studies Center of Nankai University and Dr Peter. The book was the outcome of the Asia-Pacific Symposium and Workshop of Higher Education of Indigenous People and Nationalities which was held February 28-March2,2008 in Nankai University. The paper “Indigenous Transformational Higher Education at the University of British Columbia in Canada” written by Professor Jo-ann Archibald & Dr Lee Brown and the paper “Issues of Urban Aboriginal Education in Canada” written by Professor Wesley Heber were translated and put into the book. The new deadline is October 1, 2009. Please apply for ICCS Programs and Awards by November 24! Graduate Student Scholarships Twelve (12) scholarships to spend 4-6 weeks at a Canadian university or research site to do research related to a thesis or dissertation in the field of Canadian Studies. Value: $3500 (maximum). Eligibility: scholars from Social Sciences or Humanities Programs, who are in the process of preparing a graduate thesis or doctoral dissertation on Canada. Application procedure: students must send their dossier to their Association or Associate Member; applications must then be submitted to the ICCS by an Association or Associate Member. Canadian studies postdoctoral fellowships Two internships to visit a Canadian or foreign university with a Canadian Studies program for a teaching or a research internship. Eligibility: Canadian and foreign academics, who have completed a doctoral degree on a topic primarily related to Canada and who are not employed in a full-time university teaching position. Application procedure: the application must be submitted with a recommendation from an ICCS Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member. Value: $2,500 per month (min. one month and max. three months), plus a return airline ticket. Publishing Fund Financial assistance to a scholarly press for publishing monographs on Canada written by foreign Canadianists (who is a member of an ICCS Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member). Application procedure: the application must be submitted by a scholarly or university press, with a recommendation from an ICCS Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member. The Governor General’s International Award for Canadian Studies Award to an outstanding scholar who has made a significant contribution to scholarship and to the development of Canadian Studies internationally. Awarded alternately to a Canadianist having a career primarily in Canada and to a Canadianist having a career in Canadian Studies primarily in another country. Eligibility: citizens of any country. Pierre Savard Awards Two awards for books on a Canadian topic (one award for a book written in English or French, one for a book written in a language other than English or French). Eligibility: member of an ICCS Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member. Application procedure: the application must be submitted by an ICCS Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member. 国际人类学与民族学联合会第16届大会于2009年7月27日至31日在我国云南省昆明市成功举办。南开大学加拿大研究中心的陈巴特尔博士主持专题“原住民及少数民族教育与人类文化多样性”。来自美国、德国、英国、加拿大、新西兰、菲律宾、尼泊尔、印度、斯里兰卡及国内的30余位中外学者和研究生参加了本专题会议。中外代表围绕着“多元文化教育”、“民族教育理论”“本土文化及其价值”“个案分析”“民族语言与文字”“各国实践及比较”这样六个主题进行了广泛而深入的研讨。本专题是大会165场专题讨论中唯一一个专门探讨原住民、少数民族教育及人类文化多样性议题的专题会议. 本专题收到学术论文46篇,其中,加拿大研究论文4篇。共有25位学者在会上发言,有2位学者发言的主题涉及中加原住民及少数民族教育比较研究。中国加拿大研究会副会长王昺教授应邀担任主持人和评议人。 (南开大学加拿大研究中心报道)
Section 1 Multicultural Education Section 2 Theoretical Research Section 3 Native Culture and its Value Section 4 Case Studies This panel was the only one among 165 panels to discuss the relationship between indigenous & minority education and human cultural diversity in the congress. There were 46 scholars to submit their full papers for the panel, 4 of them related to Canadian education studies. 25 scholars gave their presentations 29-31th, July in Yunnan university and 2 of them involved the subject of the comparative studies on the indigenous & minority education between China and Canada. 在过去一年里,金融危机席卷全球,对各国的经济和社会产了巨大的影响。南开大学加拿大研究中心和南开大学世界近现代史研究中心将召开一次学术会议,为加拿大学研究者提供一个平台,从政治、经济、文化等学科探讨加拿大防范危机的意识和面对危机的应变能力,进而增进中加双边合作与理解,推动我国现代化进程的健康发展。 会议主题是“加拿大-中国,危机与挑战”,拟定于2010年1月9-10日在天津召开(8日报到,10号上午文化考察,下午离会)。会议将负责各位代表的食宿、会务费和往返硬卧路费。 与参加者请在2009年10月30日之前通过信件、电子邮件或电话将您的工作单位、通讯地址、电话、电子信箱、论文题目通知会议秘书处,并在12月10日前用电子邮件寄来会议论文。 详细内容见附件中的邀请函。 (南开大学加拿大研究中心供稿) Financial crisis has been sweeping over the world for one year, exerting huge impact on every county’s economy and society. Canadian Studies Centre and Research Center for the History of Modern World, Nankai University will hold a international symposium to provide a platform for Canadianists in China and Canada to explore Canada’s consciousness of preventing crisis and ability to cope with it. The scholars will discuss the issue in terms of politics, economy, culture etc. so as to strengthen cooperation and understanding between China and Canada, and to promote development of modernization process in China. The theme of the symposium is “Canada-China:Crisis and Challenge”and it will be held in Tianjin from January 9 to 10, 2010 (Jan. 8 for registration and participants can leave on afternoon of Jan. 10). The conference will cover accommodation, registration fee and travel cost (limited to hard berth tickets) of all the participants. The council accomplished the following procedures: 1. Hearing the report of the preparation for the 14th biennial conference of the ACSC presented by Prof. Gong Yan, Director of the Canadian Studies Center at Beijing Foreign Studies University, who will be in charge of organizing the 14th Biennial Conference in November 18-20, 2010. The theme of the conference is “Inheritance and Development: Canada and China in the Context of Globalization in the 21st Century”. The deadline for submitting abstracts of papers will be March 31, 2010. The council provided suggestions on the issues like the place where the conference will be held, registration fee, financial support, agenda and the like. 2. Co-opting Prof. Gong Yan, Director of the Canadian Studies Center at Beijing Foreign Studies University, onto the Standing Council of the ACSC. 3. Discussing about natters concerning “The Third Award for Excellence in Canadian Studies in China” deciding on the Scholar Award for Canadian Studies. MA and Ph.D postgraduates who have got their degrees from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2010 are welcomed to submit their degree papers to the ACSC, whatever in Chinese or English. The result will be announced in the 14th biennial conference of the ACSC and the winners will be invited to receive the awards. 4. The joining of the Canadian Studies Center at Hunan University of Commerce into the ACSC as a standing unit. Prof. Liang Xiao, Director of the center, became a council member. 5. Prof. Feng Jianwen, President of the ACSC, presented recent international and domestic Canadian studies: 1) Prof. Feng participated in the Conference of International Council for Canadian Studies(ICCS) held in Quebec City, Canada this year, in which the members of the council were re-elected. The representative of The Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada(DFAIT)emphasized the subjects of Canadian studies which could get prior financial support. These subjects are ●. Democracy, Rule of Law, Human Rights: ●. Economic Prosperity and Competitiveness; ● Environment and Energy; ● Managing Diversity; ●. North-American Partnership; ● Peace and Security. Li Na, an MA graduate from BFSU, read her paper in the conference. The next conference will be held in Israel in late June, 2010, with the theme of resources and environment. The deadline of submitting abstracts is December 5, 2009. In 2012, it will be held in China, together with the 15th biennial conference of the ACSC. 3)The introduction to Canada Week Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Dr. Bethune’s Sacrifice in China, which will be organized by the Canadian Studies Center at Nanjing University of Finance and Economics in November, 2009. It will include lectures, an English speaking contest, a picture and book exhibition on Dr. Bethune, and a drama staged by the students. 4)Some important points on program application from DFAIT: a. The programs applied should focus on the subjects emphasized by Canadian Government or have some connections with those important subjects. b. Application forms should be filled out by referring to the new requirement precisely with particular attention given to the budget. c. When a project is accomplished, a final report, together with a fiscal report, should be sent to the Canadian Embassy in Beijing. Otherwise new applications would be rejected. d. Be aware of the deadlines for different programs: a) Assistance Program for Canadian Studies The Association is designed to provide Canadian studies associations annually with seed money for administration and publication expenses (including website), not for academic activities. b) Canada Conference Grant Program supports the organization of conferences and the applicant could be the ACSC or any center. It could be applied twice a year with two deadlines, June 1st and December 1st. c) The applications for Student Mobility Support Program need to be submitted to the local Canadian mission by February 1st. d) The Library Support Program is designed to assist university libraries to strengthen their Canadian library holdings in order to support teaching and research in Canadian Studies. It could be applied once a year without a deadline. e) The Program Development Grant(PDG) is designed to encourage scholarly inquiry and multidisciplinary professional academic activities. Applications need to be submitted by April 30th. It was determined that the council give admission to the centers which submitted to join in the ACSC according to the constitution and give caution to the centers which had not attended biennial conferences for two times successively and had not held any activities related to Canadian studies for four years. If the centers neglected the caution and still failed to be present in the biennial conference, they would be excluded from the ACSC. In addition, the members of the council reported their studies and proposed to further Canadian studies in China. The members of the Standing Council of the ACSC also attended the symposium in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Canadian Studies Center at Inner Mongolia University with the theme of “National Culture: Preservation and Sustainable Development”. Prof. Feng Jianwen, President of the ACSC, gave a speech to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Canadian Studies Center on behalf of the ACSC.
