DEADLINE – GRADUATE STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS
The ICCS Graduate Student Scholarships, worth a maximum amount of $3500, are bestowed each year to a dozen of students, helping them to spend 4-6 weeks at a Canadian university or research site, other than their own, doing research related to their thesis or dissertation in the field of Canadian Studies.
All applications must be submitted to the ICCS by November 24, 2011. More information is available here.

DEADLINE – CANADIAN STUDIES POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS
The ICCS Postdoctoral Fellowships give the opportunity to young scholars, who have completed a doctoral thesis on a topic primarily related to Canada and are not employed in a full-time university teaching position, to visit a university with a Canadian Studies program for a teaching or research fellowship.
The length of the stay will be of a minimum of one month and maximum of three months. During that stay, the student will receive $2,500 per month, plus the cost of a return airline ticket for a maximum of CAD$10,000. The application deadline is November 24, 2011. DEADLINE – PUBLISHING FUND
The ICCS Publishing Fund assists foreign Canadianists -who are members of a Canadian Studies Association or Associate Member belonging to ICCS- with the publication and distribution in Canada of scholarly monographs on the topic of Canada.

The Association of Canadian Studies in German-speaking Countries (GKS) is currently subsidizing an official E-learning program in Canadian Studies. The conference “Under Western Skies 2: Environment, Community, and Culture in North America”, will take place on October 10-13, 2012. Academics from across the disciplines as well as members of artistic and activist communities, organizations, government, labor, and NGOs are welcomed to address the environmental challenges faced by human and nonhuman actors across North America.
Proposals should run no more than 250 words in length and be attached to an email as a .doc or .docxfile. Proposals for readings, panels, screenings, displays, and workshops are also welcome. Occurring at a pivotal time for the environment of our planet, the International Polar Year (IPY) 2012 Conference draws international attention to the Polar Regions, global change, and related environmental, social and economic issues. The conference will take place on April 22-27, 2012.
From Knowledge to Action will bring together over 2,000 Arctic and Antarctic researchers, policy- and decision-makers, and a broad range of interested parties from academia, industry, non-government, education and circumpolar communities including indigenous peoples.

With four decades of scholarship to draw on, women’s art history is well established as a critical approach that has broadened the range of issues, objects and practitioners open to art historical consideration. On the same lines, the conference “Imagining History” will take place from May 3 to 5, 2012, at Concordia University (Montreal).

DFAIT FACULTY RESEARCH PROGRAM (FRP)
The FRP is designed to assist individual academics in higher education institutions to undertake short-term research about Canada or on an aspect of Canada's bilateral relations with the participating countries. OPEN LETTER: A CANADIAN JOURNAL OF WRITING AND THEORY
The journal has published aspecial issue (Fourteenth Series, Number 6, summer 2011) dedicated to Barbara Godard, who passed away over a year ago. Godard was a celebrated literary and cultural critic, writer, and translator whose contributions to Canadian Studies are widely known.
The issue called "Barbara Godard Remembered" has been edited by her former colleagues and students: Jennifer Henderson, Eva C. Karpinski, Ray Ellenwood, and Ian Sowton. Content is available here.

EXHIBITION – PAINTING CANADA: TOM THOMSON AND THE GROUP OF SEVEN
The exhibition of the renowned group of Canadian artists will be presented from October 19, 2011 to January 8, 2012 at Dulwich Picture Gallery, London (UK).
In the early twentieth century in Toronto, Canada, a group of artists started to engage with the awesome Canadian wilderness, a landscape previously considered too wild and untamed to inspire 'true' art. This exhibition will reintroduce their stunning impressions of the Canadian landscape to the British public for the first time since the 1920s. More information here.

L'exposition des œuvres du fameux groupe de peintres canadiens sera présentée du 19 octobre 2011 au 8 janvier 2012 à la Dulwich Picture Gallery de Londres (R.-U.)
À Toronto (Canada) au début du vingtième siècle, un groupe d'artistes a commencé à peindre les splendeurs du paysage naturel canadien, qui était jugé auparavant trop sauvage pour être la source d'inspiration d'un art « véritable ». Le public britannique pourra redécouvrir leurs magnifiques évocations de l'espace naturel dans cette exposition de leurs œuvres qui n'avaient pas été exposées depuis les années vingt. EXHIBITION – PAINTING CANADA: TOM THOMSON AND THE GROUP OF SEVEN
The exhibition of the renowned group of Canadian artists will be presented from October 19, 2011 to January 8, 2012 at Dulwich Picture Gallery, London (UK).
In the early twentieth century in Toronto, Canada, a group of artists started to engage with the awesome Canadian wilderness, a landscape previously considered too wild and untamed to inspire 'true' art. This exhibition will reintroduce their stunning impressions of the Canadian landscape to the British public for the first time since the 1920s. More information here.

Les bourses postdoctorales du CIEC permettent à de jeunes universitaires, ayant complété une thèse de troisième cycle sur les études canadiennes et n’occupant pas de poste permanent d’enseignement dans une université, de faire un stage d’enseignement ou de recherche dans une université dotée d’un programme d’études canadiennes. 
Le séjour proposé est d’une durée minimum d’un mois et maximum de trois mois, durant lequel l’étudiant recevra un montant de 2 500 $ par mois et une compensation financière allant jusqu’à 10 000 $ pour son billet d’avion. À Toronto (Canada) au début du vingtième siècle, un groupe d'artistes a commencé à peindre les splendeurs du paysage naturel canadien, qui était jugé auparavant trop sauvage pour être la source d'inspiration d'un art « véritable ». Le public britannique pourra redécouvrir leurs magnifiques évocations de l'espace naturel dans cette exposition de leurs œuvres qui n'avaient pas été exposées depuis les années vingt. CONFERENCE – SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY
Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, will be hosting a hockey conference on July 12-14, 2012. The title of the conference is “Constructing the Hockey Family: Home, Community, Bureaucracy and Marketplace”.
In this interdisciplinary conference, the organizers invite submissions from anyone interested in the game of hockey today and over time, its gendered dimensions, its representation in literature, film and popular culture, the personal and community identities and allegiances it generates.

CONFÉRENCE – SAINT MARY’S UNIVERSITY

NOUVELLE BOURSE DE STAGIAIRE DE RECHERCHE AU NIVEAU DU DOCTORAT EN ÉTUDES CANADIENNES

The scholarly journal of the Polish Association for Canadian Studies is presently looking for contributions for its next issue, entitled “Measures and Excess”. In the year (2011) of Afro descendants declared by UNESCO, the Canadian Studies Division at the Universidad de Matanzas (Cuba) is proud to announce the celebration of its tenth conference, “Multiculturalism and Canadian Afro Descendants”, to be held on February 27-29, 2012 at the main campus of the Universidad de Matanzas.
The conference will bring together scholars, researchers and professors, along with invited keynote speakers, to catalyze the discussion mainly on Canadian multiculturalism and Afro-Canadian descendants’ contribution to Canadian society.

IMMANENCE ET TRANSTEXTUALITÉ DANS L’OEUVRE ROMANESQUE DE ROBERT LALONDE
The book puts forward that the originality of the work of Robert Lalonde, author of about twenty works of literature published in France and in Quebec, lies in what is conceptualized here as “immanentness” and “transtextuality”. 
“Immanentness” is seen, in this case, as a direct contact with nature that excludes all transcendence –religious or laic-. As for “transtextuality”, it has to be understood as the influence another work has on a previously-written work. The author of the book, Krzysztof Jarosz, applies himself to show that the coexistence in Lalonde’s work of these two ingredients, which seem to reproduce the traditional dichotomy nature/culture, forms a single combination for the writer’s imagination and artistic sensitivity.

The President emeritus of the AFEC, Jean-Michel Lacroix, received on July 14 the Insigne du mérite 2011 from the University of Montreal. Professor Lacroix teaches at the Université Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle and is a previous president of the ICCS (1989-1991).
By bestowing the Insigne du mérite, the Faculté des arts et des sciences wants to underline the distinction of Professor Lacroix, who knew how to lead an exceptional career as a professor, a senior civil servant in the field of education, a prolific author, a specialist of North American civilization, a leader in the development of Canadian studies in France and Europe, and an associate of the University of Montreal, particularly of the Faculté des arts et des sciences. PANCS will hold its next conference at Korea University on October 6, 2011. Issues pertaining to trade, security, education, energy, environment, tourism, politics, law, diplomacy, and culture will be analysed under the theme “Canadian National Interests in the Asia-Pacific Region”.
The conference organizers welcome proposals addressing the questions of what the region means to Canada, what is at stake, what are the risks and opportunities, how issues such as education, trade, energy, and security matter to Canada in relation to the Asia-Pacific countries. Papers can be country-specific, comparative or regional in focus.  Graduate students are especially encouraged to submit their proposals.
Contributors are invited to submit a 200-word abstract and a short biography stating their affiliation and research interests before September 1, 2011. SEMINAR – GROUPE INTERDISCIPLINAIRE DE RECHERCHE SUR LES AMÉRIQUES (GIRA)
The 3rd edition of the international seminar Revisioning the Americas through Indigenous Cinema will be held in Montreal and Kahnawake on August 4-5, 2011 as a part of the annual First Peoples’ Film Festival Présence autochtone.
The event aims to create a space for Indigenous filmmakers/videomakers, distributors, producers, scholars, representatives from funding organizations as well as people from local indigenous communities to meet and discuss in order to bring about a collaborative reflection on Indigenous cinema in the Americas. Conferences and panels will offer an opportunity to reach a greater understanding of the role of Indigenous film experiences and perspectives in what are, and what can become, the Americas.

The Association of Italian Canadian Writers invites submissions for aproject on the internment of Italian Canadians during the Second World War.
The aim of the project funded by the Community Historical Recognition Program (CHRP) is toincrease public awareness and knowledge about the internment of Italian Canadians during the Second World War, in the hope of bringing about a greater understanding of broader issues such as racism and discrimination – in both historical and contemporary terms.

VISITS OF ARCHAEOLOGICAL DIGS IN MONTREAL
Pointe-à-Callière and the Centre d’histoire de Montréal are proud to participate in the creation of visits of the archaeological digs of Place d’Youville Ouest, in Old Montreal. The digs include vestiges of the Sainte-Anne Market, which became the Parliament of the United Province of Canada from 1844 to 1849. The visits are free and will start on July 5, 2011.
Every half-hour between 1 pm and 4 pm, from Tuesday to Sunday, guides from the Museum and the Centre d'histoire de Montréal will offer an explanation of the work being carried out. The meeting point is at the Centre d’histoire de Montréal. For more information: 514 872-3207 and 514 872-9150.

DISTINCTION À L’ASSOCIATION FRANÇAISE D’ÉTUDES CANADIENNES (AFEC)
Le président honoraire de l’AFEC, Jean-Michel Lacroix, professeur à l’Université Paris 3 Sorbonne Nouvelle et ancien président du CIEC (1989-1991), a reçu le 14 juin dernier l’Insigne du mérite 2011 de l’Université de Montréal.
En lui décernant l’Insigne du mérite, la Faculté des arts et des sciences veut souligner la distinction du professeur Lacroix, qui a su mener parallèlement une carrière exceptionnelle de professeur, de grand commis d’État dans le milieu de l’enseignement, d’auteur prolifique, de spécialiste de la civilisation nord-américaine, de leader dans l’avancement des études canadiennes en France et en Europe, et de partenaire de l’Université de Montréal, particulièrement de la Faculté des arts et des sciences. Le CIEC souhaite donc transmettre ses plus sincères félicitations à M. Lacroix!

Le PANCS tiendra sa prochaine conférence à Korea University le 6 octobre 2011. Les questions relatives au commerce, à la sécurité, l’éducation, l’énergie, l’environnement, le tourisme, la politique, la loi, la diplomatie et la culture seront analysées sous le thème « Canadian National Interests in the Asia-Pacific Region ».
Les propositions devront être en lien avec les questions : Qu’est-ce que la région signifie pour le Canada ? Qu’est-ce qui est en jeu ? Quels sont les risques et les opportunités ? Comment certains problèmes comme l’éducation, le commerce, l’énergie et la sécurité importent pour le Canada et sa relation avec les pays de l’Asie-Pacifique ? Les communications peuvent être spécifiques à un pays, comparatives ou dans une perspective régionale. Les étudiants diplômés sont spécialement encouragés à soumettre leurs propositions.
Les participants sont invités à soumettre un résumé de 200 mots et une courte bibliographie énonçant leur affiliation et leurs intérêts de recherche avant le 1erseptembre 2011. COLLOQUE – GROUPE INTERDISCIPLINAIRE DE RECHERCHE SUR LES AMÉRIQUES (GIRA)
La 3e édition du colloque international Regards autochtones sur les Amériquesse tiendra les 4 et 5 août 2011, à Montréal et à Kahnawake, dans le cadre du festival de films annuel des Premières nations « Présence autochtone ».
L’événement collaboratif rassemblera chercheurs universitaires, cinéastes/vidéastes et autres professionnels du cinéma autochtone, représentants d’organismes subventionnaires et gens des communautés autochtones locales dans le but d’engager une réflexion collaborative sur le cinéma autochtone dans les Amériques. L’Association canadienne des écrivains et des écrivaines d’origine italienne invite les propositions pour un projet portant sur l’internement des Canadiens italiens durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

Pointe-à-Callière et le Centre d'histoire de Montréal sont heureux de s’associer pour l’animation du chantier de fouilles archéologiques de la place D'Youville Ouest, dans le Vieux-Montréal, où se trouvent des vestiges du marché Sainte-Anne devenu le parlement du Canada-Uni de 1844 à 1849. Les visites sont offertes gratuitement à compter du 5 juillet 2011.

INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS- BRAZILIAN ASSOCIATION FOR CANADIAN STUDIES (ABECAN)
ABECAN’S XI international congress, to take place in Salvador-Bahia at the Federal University of Bahia on October 24-26, 2011, shall broaden the Association’s historical cooperation with renowned institutions of education, research, extension, as well as development and promotion agencies, both domestic and international. Since ABECAN will officially celebrate its twentieth anniversary at the same time, the congress will be entitled “20 Years of Brazil-Canada Interface”.
The proposed academic debates during the Congress will reflect upon a new social reality, which includes the ways to organize and live in a society, the confluences and conflicts of interests among nations and the challenges of science in the present days through the following topic guidelines:

CONGRESS- CANADIAN ASSOCIATION FOR LATIN AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN STUDIES (CALACS)
The 41st congress of the CALACS, “Between Indigeneity and the Transnational: Place and Mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean”, will be held on May 18-20, 2012 at UBC Okanagan, Kelowna, British Columbia.
The congress convokes scholars from across the social sciences and the humanities, as well as activists and artists, to reconsider notions of place and mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the variety of transnational and borderless social interactions that contest legacies of imperialism, colonialism, exclusion and violence across the Americas and the Caribbean. In addition to this central theme, the conference welcomes submissions related to other themes involving Latin America and the Caribbean.

CANADA’S CITIZEN SOLDIERS: A DISCUSSION PAPER
This report is an initial attempt to highlight some of the more important issues facing the Canadian Army Reserve. The report represents an important first step in promoting what is hoped will be a wider ranging examination of the Reserve and its role as part of an effective and modern Canadian military.
The report recognizes the important contribution made by the Reserve to deployments in the post-Cold War era and argues that the experience gained must be built upon in order to ensure an effective Reserve Force for the future. The document is available here.

CANADIAN MEDICARE: ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT
The book written by Professor Liu Guangtai from the Canadian Studies Centre in Hebei Normal University has recently been published by the World Affairs Press in Beijing.
The book composed of six chapters explains the reasons of the disputes of the Medicare between the Canadian federal government and the provincial governments. It also traces back the medical system in Canadian history and pays more attention to the period following WWII, which brought an evolution of the public medical insurance.

MARGARET ATWOOD: A STUDY FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ECO-CRITICISM
Written by Yuan Xia, the book was published in November 2010 by Shanghai Academic Press. The book focuses on Margaret Atwood’s life and explores her concerns about the environmental problems the whole world is facing. It is the first book in China on a Canadian writer’s ecological thought.

WRITING THE NORTHLAND: JACK LONDON’S AND ROBERT W. SERVICE’S IMAGINARY GEOGRAPHY
The book written by Barbara Stefanie Giehmann is the first comparison of the two authors, examining their depiction of the “Northland” at the time of the Klondike gold rush and afterwards.
Applying the concept of imaginary geography to the North, the book focuses on labels attached to the North by non-northerners. It is recommended for anyone interested in the north and in a comparative approach to the literature and culture of the United States and Canada.

IDRC RESEARCH AWARDS
The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) offers annually research awards to Canadians, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of developing countries pursuing master’s or doctoral studies at a recognized university or having completed a master’s or doctoral program at a recognized university. Research award recipients will receive a salary ranging from $ 37,035 to $ 42,873 for one year.
The selected candidates will undertake a one-year paid program of research on the topic submitted when competing for the award. The research work will be done in one or several developing countries, as well as at IDRC’s head office in Ottawa, Canada. Candidates must conduct their research in areas corresponding to IDRC's research priorities.
To be eligible, the candidates must meet the following requirements:
  Be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada, or a citizen of a developing country;
Be either currently enrolled at a recognized university at the master's or doctoral level or have completed a master's or doctoral degree at a recognized university. These awards may be part of an academic requirement;
Your proposed research must focus on one or more developing countries.

Le XIe congrès international de l’ABECAN aura lieu à l’Université fédérale de Bahia (Salvador, Bahia) du 24 au 26 octobre 2011, au moment où l’ABECAN fêtera officiellement ses vingt ans de fondation.
Le congrès, qui s’intitulera « 20 ans d’interfaces Brésil-Canada », consolidera le partenariat historique entre l’Association et des institutions nationales et étrangères renommées, donc celles d’enseignement, de recherche, d’extension et de financement. Le 41econgrès de la CALACS, intitulé « Entre indigénéité et transnationalisme : espace et mobilité en Amérique latine et dans les Caraïbes », sera présenté les 18-20 mai 2012 à l’Université de Colombie-Britannique (UBC), campus de Okanagan, à Kelowna.
Le congrès invite les chercheurs de toutes les disciplines des sciences humaines, des arts et des lettres, les activistes et les artistes, à réfléchir sur la notion d’espace et de mobilité en Amérique latine et dans les Caraïbes. Le congrès se penchera aussi sur les différentes interactions sociales, transfrontalières ou transnationales, qui remettent en question les héritages d’impérialisme, de colonialisme, d’exclusion et de violence, présents d’un bout à l’autre des Amériques et des Caraïbes. Les organisateurs de la conférence invitent également les intéressés à soumettre des propositions portant sur d’autres sujets touchant l’Amérique latine et les Caraïbes.

CANADA’S CITIZEN SOLDIERS: A DISCUSSION PAPER
Le rapport est une première tentative visant à souligner les principaux enjeux relatifs à la Réserve de l’Armée canadienne. Le rapport représente un premier pas d’envergure dans la promotion de ce qui sera, espérons-le, un examen à plus large portée de la réserve et de son rôle en tant que composante d’une armée canadienne efficace et moderne.
Le rapport reconnaît l’importante contribution de la réserve lors des déploiements qui eurent lieu suite à la Guerre froide et avance que l’expérience acquise doit contribuer à assurer une Force de réserve efficace pour l’avenir. Le document est disponible ici.

Chaque année, le Centre de recherche en développement international (CRDI) offre la possibilité à des Canadiens, des résidents permanents du Canada ou des citoyens de pays en développement ayant amorcé ou ayant terminé un programme de maîtrise ou de doctorat offert dans une université reconnue de demander une bourse de recherche, allant de 37 035 $ à 42 873 $ pour une année.

FORUM - DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND INTERNATIONAL TRADE (DFAIT)
This past May 26, the International Council for Canadian Studies participated in a forum presented by the International Education and Youth Division of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) on the evaluation of the first three years of the Understanding Canada Program.

ICCS 30thANNIVERSARY AND RECEPTION OF THE PRESIDENT
The 30th anniversary ceremony for theInternational Council for Canadian Studies and the reception of the president, Klaus-Dieter Ertler, were held during the evening last May 26 in the Skelton Lobby of the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT).
Founded in 1981, the Council blew out its 30 candles last week. The ICCS President reflected on the Council’s 30 years, and a commemorative book was launched during the ceremony.
Four certificates of merit were awarded to honour the contributions of certain persons to the development of Canadian Studies. Recipients were Ms. Wang Li, who is responsible for the academic relations and Canadian Studies at the Embassy of Canada in China, Mr. Robert Thacker, director of the Canadian Studies Program at Saint Lawrence University, Mr. Albert Rau, a 1977 founding member of the Association for Canadian Studies in the German Speaking Countries, and Mr. Keith Battarbee, who has been actively involved in the Nordic Association for Canadian Studies (NACS) since 1999.
 
ICCS COCKTAIL AND BANQUET
This past May 28, the annual banquet of the International Council for Canadian Studies took place in the Pearson room of the Lord Elgin hotel in Ottawa, preceded by a cocktail in the Lady Elgin room.
During the banquet, Patrick James, the new President, gave the first speech of his mandate. During the ceremony, the prestigious Governor General's International Award for Canadian Studies was presented to Dr. Gerry Turcotte who was visibly moved by the honour.
Three honorary prizes were also presented. First, the Best Doctoral Thesis in Canadian Studies which was awarded to Dr. Carlos Alberto Tello for his thesis Urban Revitalization and Quality of Life in Inner City Montreal and Mexico. Dr. Telloexpressed his gratitude and offered a short description of his comparative study on the urban development of the cities of Montreal and Mexico.
This was followed by the Pierre Savard Awards which were presented to Mr. Robin Bates and Dr. Ian McKay in the category “Book written in French or English”. When thanking the audience, they also offered a dynamic summary of their monograph Provinceof History.Dr. Yury G. Akimov, a recipient of the same prize in the category “Book written in a language other than French or English”, gave a moving thank-you speech with a spirited personal story on the difficulty of having been, for such a long time, the only student at his university to study Canada.
The evening ended with a short speech by Patrick James who thanked guests for their presence at the event.
 
NEW ASSOCIATE MEMBER- CANADIAN STUDIES NETWORK
Since the Annual General Meeting of May 27-28, the ICCS is pleased to announce that the Canadian Studies Network (CSN-REC) has been welcomed as a new associate member on the ICCS Board of Directors.
The CSN is a new association dedicated to serving the purposes of scholars, including faculties, students, and independent researchers involved in the study of Canada through Canadian Studies programs or other disciplines at the postsecondary level in Canada. 40thANNIVERSARY CONFERENCE – Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS)
On November 16-20, 2011, the ACSUS will present its biennial conference. The opening reception on November 16 will take place on the Parliament Hill, whereas a reception will be held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization on November 17. Additional plenary events will be held at the Westin Hotel, Ottawa.
The program will feature over one hundred panels and roundtables on Canada and Canada-US relations across twelve disciplines. A draft program, along with registration and accommodation details, is available at www.acsus.org.
 
CALL FOR PAPERS- CANADIAN STUDIES NETWORK
The Canadian Studies Network will present the conference entitled “The Multi-Languages of Canadian Studies” on September 30 and October 1, 2011 at the Glendon College, York University (Toronto).
This conference will examine how the diversity of Canadian languages contributes to the challenges and successes of the country. Scholars will discuss in panels and round-tables the various roles of language in Canadian politics, society, history, literature and culture. Papers will also explore the contact zones between different languages, raising issues of translation, communication and miscommunication. 
Please send proposals for papers and panels by June 15, 2011 to Laura Taman, Coordinator, Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies, York University, at llt@yorku.ca. Contributors are expected to send a proposal of about 150 words and a one-page c.v.
The main languages of the conference will be English and French although participants may choose to provide short presentations in other languages, with the expectation that they will also summarize their views in one of the two official languages.
 
NEW NOMINATIONS AT THE INSTITUT DES AMÉRIQUES (IdA)
The Institut des Amériqueshas just proceeded to the renewal of its office. Hélène Harter (president of the Association française d’études canadiennes, AFEC) is henceforth treasurer of the IdA and Jean-Michel Lacroix (honorary president of the AFEC) is now vice-president.
The Institut des Amériques has for objective to endow France of a central institution in Europe for the study of the American continent. The nature of the Institut des Amériques is to unite North Americanist and Latin Americanist strengths in human and social sciences, and so to combine the various scientific approaches, not only in a comparative perspective, but also to develop a trans-American approach.

CALL FOR PAPERS: CENTRO PARAGUAYO DE ESTUDIOS CANADIENSES
The Centro Paraguayo de Estudios Canadienses (CPEC) will be hosting the Second Congress of the Americas entitled: “Education, Technology and the Teaching of English Language to Strengthen Democracy”. Sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT), the congress will take place in Asunción, Paraguay, on August 19-20, 2011.
The congress will bring together renowned Canadianists and professionals in the field of Education, Technology, and English Language Teaching. It will be an opportunity to exchange ideas and practical teaching experiences with colleagues who share similar interests. 
The main objectives of this congress are:
To promote future cooperative projects among participating research teams from various countries
To establish closer ties among researchers from the Americas by discussing and sharing ideas on the main issues unfolded during the conference
To encourage the involvement of young researchers to deliver innovative presentations of scientific quality
To promote inter-disciplinary and international dialogues

The book, written by Mareike Neuhaus, is the first comprehensive study of North American Indigenous languages as the basis of textualized orality in Indigenous literatures composed in English.
Drawing on a significant Indigenous language structure, the holophrase (one-word sentence), the author proposes “holophrastic reading” as a culturally specific reading strategy for orality in Indigenous writing.
Mareike Neuhauscompleted her PhD in English at Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany in 2008. She was an Andrew W. Mellon postdoctoral fellow at the Jackman Humanities Institute, University of Toronto, from 2008 to 2010 and now holds a Government of Canada postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of English at the University of Toronto.

CANADIAN STUDIES PROFESSOR WINS PRIZE FOR WORK ON ARCTIC SOVEREIGNITY
Shelagh D. Grant, adjunct professor of Canadian Studies at Trent University, earned the $ 10,000 award with her book Polar Imperative: A History of Arctic Sovereignty in North America. The prize was formally awarded on May 26, 2011 at the J.W. Dafoe Foundation’s annual general meeting in Winnipeg.

FORUM - MINISTÈRE DES AFFAIRES ÉTRANGÈRES ET DU COMMERCE INTERNATIONAL
Le 26 mai dernier, la Direction de l’éducation internationale et de la jeunesse des Affaires étrangères et du Commerce international (MAECI) a tenu un forum, auquel a participé le Conseil international d’études canadiennes, sur l’évaluation des trois premières années du programme Comprendre le Canada.
Le forum visait à évaluer les besoins des parties prenantes que sont les canadianistes et leurs organisations, ainsi que le gouvernement canadien, afin d’apporter les changements nécessaires. 30eANNIVERSAIRE DU CIEC ET RÉCEPTION DU PRÉSIDENT
Dans la soirée du 26 mai dernier eut lieu au foyer Skelton du ministère des Affaires étrangères et du Commerce international (MAECI) la cérémonie du 30eanniversaire du Conseil international d’études canadiennesainsi que la réception de son président, Klaus-Dieter Ertler.
En effet, fondé en 1981, le Conseil a soufflé ses 30 chandelles la semaine dernière. Le président du CIEC a offert ses réflexions sur les 30 années du conseil, et un livre commémoratif a été lancé lors de la cérémonie.
Quatre certificats de mérite ont été décernés pour rendre hommage à l’apport de certaines personnes au développement des études canadiennes. Les récipiendaires sont Madame Wang Li, responsable des programmes académiques et des études canadiennes à l’Ambassade du canada en Chine, Monsieur Robert Thacker, directeur du Canadian Studies Program de Saint Lawrence University, Monsieur Albert Rau, membre fondateur de l’Association d’études canadiennes dans les pays de langue allemande de 1977 et Monsieur Keith Battarbee, activement impliqué dans le comité de l’Association nordique d’études canadiennes (ANEC) depuis 1999.
 
COCKTAIL ET BANQUET DU CIEC
Le 28 mai dernier, le banquet annuel du Conseil international d’études canadiennes a pris place dans la salle Pearson de l’hôtel Lord Elgin à Ottawa, précédé d’un cocktail dans la salle Lady Elgin du même hôtel.
Lors du banquet, le nouveau président du Conseil, Patrick James, a donc donné le premier discours de son mandat. Lors de la cérémonie, le prestigieux Prix international du Gouverneur général en études canadiennes a été remis à Monsieur Gerry Turcotte, visiblement touché par l’honneur qui lui avait été décerné.
Trois prix d’honneur ont aussi été remis. Il s’agit d’abord du Prix de la meilleure thèse de doctorat en études canadiennes, décerné à Monsieur Carlos Alberto Tello pour sa thèse intitulée Urban Revitalization and Quality of Life in Inner City Montreal and Mexico. Ce dernier a exprimé sa reconnaissance et a fourni une courte description de son étude comparative sur l’urbanisme des villes de Montréal et de Mexico.
Ensuite, les Prix Pierre Savard ont été remis à Messieurs Robin Bates et Ian McKay pour la catégorie « Livre écrit en français ou en anglais ». Lors de leurs remerciements, ces derniers ont offert aux gens présents un résumé dynamique de leur monographie Province of History. Monsieur Yury G. Akimov, récipiendaire du même prix pour la catégorie « Livre écrit dans une langue autre que le français ou l’anglais », a agrémenté ses remerciements d’une histoire personnelle touchante sur la difficulté d’avoir longtemps été le seul étudiant de son université à étudier le Canada.
La soirée s’est ensuite clôturée par un court discours de Monsieur James, remerciant les invités pour leur présence.
 
NOUVEAU MEMBRE ASSOCIÉ – LE RÉSEAU DES ÉTUDES CANADIENNES
Depuis l’assemblée générale annuelle des 27-28 mai, le CIEC est heureux d’annoncer qu’un nouveau membre associé s’est ajouté à son conseil d’administration, soit le Réseau d’études canadiennes (REC).
Ce dernier est une nouvelle association dédiée à servir les objectifs des académiques, incluant les facultés, les étudiants et les chercheurs indépendants, impliqués dans l’étude du Canada à travers des programmes d’études canadiennes ou d’autres disciplines au niveau postsecondaire au Canada.

CONFERENCE DU 40e ANNIVERSAIRE – Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS)
Du 16 au 20 novembre 2011, l’ACSUS présentera sa conférence biennale. La cérémonie d’ouverture aura lieu sur la Colline parlementaire le 16 novembre, tandis qu’une réception se déroulera le lendemain au Musée canadien des civilisations. D’autres événements pléniers seront ensuite tenus à l’hôtel Westin d’Ottawa. 
Le programme comportera plus d’une centaine de groupes de travail et de tables rondes ayant pour thème le Canada ainsi que ses relations avec les États-Unis, vu à travers douze disciplines. APPEL À COMMUNICATION- RÉSEAU D’ÉTUDES CANADIENNES
Le Réseau d’études canadiennes présentera un colloque intitulé« Les langues diverses des études canadiennes » le 30 septembre et le 1 octobre 2011 au Collège universitaire Glendon de l’Université York (Toronto).
Le colloque examinera comment la diversité des langues canadiennes contribue aux défis et aux succès du pays. Lors de la tenue de groupes de discussion et de tables rondes, les participants discuteront des divers rôles de la langue dans la politique, la société, l’histoire, la littérature et la culture canadiennes. Les interventions traiteront aussi des zones de contact entre les différentes langues, qui peuvent engendrer des problèmes de traduction, de communication et d’interprétation.
Les propositions pour les communications et les tables rondes doivent être envoyées à Laura Taman, coordinatrice, Centre Robarts des Études canadiennes de l’Université York  à l’adresse llt@yorku.caavant le 15 juin. Veuillez envoyer une proposition d’environ 150 mots, et un court résumé professionnel d’une page. 
Les langues premières du colloque seront le français et l’anglais, toutefois les participants peuvent choisir de faire leur présentation dans d’autres langues, en l’agrémentant d’un résumé présenté dans l’une des deux langues officielles.
 
NOUVELLES NOMIMATION À L’INSTUT DES AMÉRIQUES (IdA)
L’Institut des Amériques vient de procéder au renouvellement de son bureau. Hélène Harter (présidente de l’Association française des études canadiennes, AFEC) est désormais trésorière de l’IdA et Jean-Michel Lacroix (président honoraire de l’AFEC), vice-président.
L’Institut des Amériques a pour objectif de doter la France d'une institution centrale en Europe pour l'étude du continent américain. L'esprit de l'Institut des Amériques est de fédérer les forces nord-américanistes et latino-américanistes en sciences humaines et sociales. Ce regroupement compte ainsi marier les différentes approches scientifiques, non seulement dans une optique comparatiste, mais aussi afin de développer une approche transaméricaine.

En s’inspirant d’une structure particulière de la langue autochtone - l’holophrase (la phrase à un seul mot)- l’auteur propose la « lecture holophrasique » comme stratégie de lecture culturellement spécifique à l’oralité dans l’écriture autochtone.
Mareike Neuhausa complété son doctorat en Anglais à Philipps-Universität Marburg, en Allemagne, en 2008. Elle a obtenu la bourse postdoctorale Andrew W. Mellon au Jackman Humanities Institute de l’Université de Toronto de 2008 à 2010, et est récipiendaire de la bourse pour la recherche postdoctorale du Gouvernement du Canada dans le Department of English à l’Université de Toronto.

Shelagh D. Grant, professeure adjointe en Études canadiennes à Trent University, a reçu un prix pour son livre Polar Imperative: A History of Arctic Sovereignty in North America. Le prix lui a été conféré de manière formelle le 26 mai 2011, lors de l’assemblée générale annuelle de J.W. Dafoe Foundation, à Winnipeg.
