1. 西南科技大学加研中心举行“加拿大文化周”活动(“The Week of Canada” Held in Southwest University of Science and Technology)

>             在加拿大大使馆的资助下,我校加研中心于2008年3月17日至3月23日顺利地完成了申请项目―― “加拿大文化周”活动。活动内容包括:演讲比赛、加大大文化系列讲座、加拿大“枫”情图片展。
>
>            演讲比赛:经过初选-半决赛-决赛等一系列选拔活动,演讲题目为:“Canada and China---One World One Dream”。

总共157名学生报名参加了演讲比赛,其中20名同学进入半决赛,最终6名同学进入决赛并分获一、二、三等奖。超过300名来自全校各学院的同学旁听了所有场次的演讲比赛。

>            在“枫”情图片展活动中,展出照片分为五大主题:概况、自然风光、历史文化、特色建筑、人与自然。超过400名学生参加了本次图片展。                
>
>            在系列讲座部分,我们共设置了4场讲座。其中,我院李仕俊副教授刚于2007年访问加拿大渥太华大学回国,因此我们邀请李老师为我们奉献两场讲座:“加拿大概况”、“加拿大多元文化”;加研中心刘捷教授受邀做“加拿大动物故事叙述模式”的讲座;学院郑莉老师研究生方向为“加拿大文学与文化”,因 此本次活动邀请她做题为“中加关系史”的讲座。超过30名教师和400名学生参加了上述讲座。

>                           本次活动成功地传达了有关加拿大文化与文学的信息,同时加深了活动参与者对加拿大的兴趣和了解。

>                 With the assistance of the Canada Embassy, our center has been granted the program of “the Week of Canada”, including three main parts----the speaking contest, the photo exhibition and the lecture series.
>
>            Under the guidance of the College of Foreign Languages and Culture in Southwest University of Science and Technology, both the English majors and students from other majors joined the activities with Canadian culture as the theme to enhance their understanding about Canadian literature, history and culture as well as to improve their English proficiency. We organized an English speaking contest on relationship between China and Canada, and the two Olympic Games to be held in these two countries. Approximate 500 students got involved in the contests.

>            And the lecture series showed the students another brand new field of foreign culture, which undoubtedly raised a new wave of interest in the study of Canadian literature and culture.  Approximate 400 students joined the 4 lectures.

>            The students got a general view on  the traditions, history, warm-hearted and friendly people and grand natural beauty of Canada. They found the exhibition  was amazing and terrific.
>                                  By participating in all these activities, both English majors and non-English majors were benefited in both Canadian culture and English.

2. 春风先发枫叶情--记吉林大学外国语学院首届“加拿大文化活动周”(The First “Canadian Culture Week” Held in Jilin University)

>             4月18日晚,伴随着阵阵掌声,吉林大学外国语学院首届“加拿大文化活动周”落下帷幕。此次活动由吉林大学外国语学院英语系与加拿大研究中心联合主办,旨在活跃学生们的学习生活,激发学习热情,营造良好的学习氛围,加深对包括加拿大在内的英语国家文化的认识和了解。

>            此次“加拿大文化活动周”共分为三个部分:4月14日晚开幕式之后放映了以加拿大历史为主题的电影,并由英语系教师进行了讲评;4月16日下午加拿大学者Dennis Abbot为学生们做了一场题为“加美文化比较”的专题讲座;4月18日晚举办了以加拿大文化为主题的演讲比赛。英语系师生积极踊跃参加此次活动,普遍感到开阔了视野,加深了对加拿大社会、历史和文化的认识,感悟了枫叶之国的魅力,了解了早期加拿大移民的艰辛、西部牛仔的狂放、尼亚加拉瀑布的壮观。同学们不但在语言学习上获益匪浅,同时加深了对加拿大历史和文化的领悟,并希望这类活动经常举办。闭幕式上,外国语学院党总支书记巩英春、副院长曲晶对此次活动给与了高度的评价,鼓励英语系师生继续努力,将“加拿大文化活动周”越办越好。

>            吉林大学加拿大研究中心成立于1991年,隶属“中国加拿大研究会”和“国际加拿大研究理事会”。中心成立以来多次组织校内研究人员开展学术活动,编写出版了《加拿大学辞典》和《加拿大探索》,发表了学术论文近五十余篇;与加拿大驻华使馆、加拿大部分高校建立了广泛的工作联系,先后获得加拿大政府多项资助,并促成多人赴加拿大进修深造。加拿大驻华使馆为中心赠送了大量音像资料、图书和报刊,目前加拿大研究资料库已经初具规模。2005年至今,加拿大研究中心共发表了8篇加拿大文学研究方面的论文,出版了1部学术专著,研究项目“加拿大华裔文学研究”获吉林大学立项,“多元文化语境下的当代加拿大英语文学研究”申报吉林省社会科学基金项目,正在审批过程中。“加拿大文学专题”也列入外国语学院英语语言文学专业硕士研究生必修课程。

>            In order to enrich students’ school life, actuate their study zest and let them have more understanding of cultures of English countries including Canada, English Language Department and Canadian Studies Centre, Jilin University co-organized the first Canadian Culture Week in Foreign Languages School.  
>
>            The Canadian Culture Week included three activities: 1) a film shown on Canadian history on the evening of April 14 with comment and appraise by Teachers of English Department; 2) a guest lecture given by Canadian Prof. Dennis Abbot on Comparison between Canadian and American Culture on the afternoon of April 16; 3) Speaking contest on Canadian culture on the evening of April 18. Students at English Language Department were actively involved in the activity, through which they felt the charm of this maple country, understood hard life of early immigrants, appreciated unruly and unrestrained cowboys in the west, and enjoyed the magnificence of Niagara Fall. On the closing ceremony the head of Foreign Languages School appraised highly the activity and encouraged teachers and students carry out more Canadian studies activities.

>            Established in 1991, Canadian Studies Centre, Jilin University is subordinate to Association for Canadian Studies in China and International Council for Canadian Studies. Apart from Dictionary of Canadian Studies Dictionary and Canadian Exploration the centre published nearly fifty academic articles. The centre established contact with Canadian Embassy in Beijing and some Canadian Higher education institutions, acquired many grants from Canadian government and sent several members to pursue further studies. With large amount of audio-visual materials books and journals presented by Canadian Embassy in Beijing, the data base of the centre has accumulated into certain size. Since 2005 the centre has published eight articles on Canadian literature and one monograph; “The Studies of Chinese Canadian Literature” was approved as a research programme by Jilin University; “Contemporary Canadian Literature Studies in the Context of Multiculture ” is now applying for being approved as a research programme supported by Social Science Fund of Jilin Province. Special Topic of Canadian Literature has been listed as a required Master course for graduates majoring language at English Language Department.

3. Professor Ruth Hayhoe from  University of Toronto and Dr. Qiang Zha from York University Visiting Nankai University

>             At the invitation of Dr Chen Bateer in Canadian Studies Center of Nankai University, Professor Ruth Hayhoe from University of Toronto and Dr. Qiang Zha from York University visited Nankai University on May 11, 2008.
>
>            Professor Ruth Hayhoe, former dean of the Institute of Education in Hong Kong, is a well-known scholar in the world on the research of comparative education and Chinese higher education. She has been committing herself to introducing Chinese higher education and cultural tradition to the western counterparts and promoting the equal exchange and dialogue and the spread of cross-cultural communication between the West and the East. Her major works include   "KnowledgeAcross Cultures: A Contribution to Dialogue Among Civilizations”, “China's Universities 1895-1995: A Century of Cultural Conflict” ,“Education, Culture, and Identity in Twentieth-Century China”.                                                        Prof. Ruth Hayhoe giving presentation
