1. 加拿大驻华大使馆官员和中国加拿大研究会会长、秘书长到南京财经大学进行考察 (An Officer of Canadian Embassy in Beijing and President and Secretary-General of ACSC Visited Nanjing University of Finance and Economics)
2008年3月13日，加拿大驻华大使馆文化处项目官员王荔女士和中国加拿大研究会会长、山东大学外国语学院郭继德教授、秘书长、山东大学历史文化学院李巍教授一行三人来我校考察中国加拿大研究会第十三届年会筹备情况。上午，考察组在年会承办单位、我校外语系系主任王克明教授陪同下考察了年会代表下榻并进行分组讨论的双门楼宾馆。下午，王主任和我校加拿大研究中心主任冯建文教授陪同考察组参观了年会开幕式会场、校图书馆报告厅，顺便参观了图书馆和加拿大研究中心，并由王主任具体汇报了年会筹备情况。王荔女士代表加拿大驻华大使馆高度评价了年会的筹备工作，并通报了与年会有关的情况。郭会长和李秘书长就年会筹备工作提出了具体的建议，并就有关问题与大家进行了商讨。下午4时，王荔女士和郭会长在冯建文教授陪同下和国际合作与交流处处长邱伟芬教授座谈，她了解了我校与加拿大开展合作与交流的情况，对我校大力支持加拿大研究深表赞赏。晚6时，我校副校长许承明教授设便宴招待考察组一行。 中国加拿大研究会年会每两年召开一次，是一个高规格的国际学术研讨会。以往各次都是在老牌的重点大学召开的，由我校这样新的地方院校承办年会，在历史上还是第一次。这充分显示了学会对我校加拿大研究实力的重视，也显示了我校日益增长的学术影响力。许副校长代表我校表示一定办好加拿大研究年会，并大力支持我校的加拿大研究，使加拿大研究成为我校重要的学科建设平台，使加拿大研究中心成为我校开展国际合作与交流、扩大我校国内外学术影响力的一个重要窗口。（南京财经大学加拿大研究中心供稿）
On March 13, 2008 Ms. Wang Li, Academic Relations Officer of Canadian Embassy in Beijing, Prof. Guo Jide, President of ACSC and Prof. Li Wei, Secretary-General of ACSC visited Nanjing University of Finance and Economics to inspect the progress in preparation for 13th Biennial Conference of ACSC. Canadian Studies Centre and Department of Foreign Laguanges will be the host of the Conference later this year. In the morning Prof. Wang Keming, Dean of the Department showed the inspecting group around Shuang Men Lou Hotel where the participants are going to stay and hold panel discussions during the Conference. Accompanied by Prof. Feng Jianwen, Director of the Centre, the group visited university library, its Reporting Hall----the venue for Conference’s opening ceremony, and Canadian Studies Centre in the afternoon. Then they heard the report by Dean Wang Kening about the preparation for the Conference. Ms. Wang Li on behalf of Canadian Embassy, put a premium on the preparation for the Conference and provided some related information. President Guo and Secretary-General Li discussed with Ms. Wang, Prof. Feng and Dean. Wang about the preparatory work and made some suggestions. At 4 P.M. Prof. Qiu Weifen, Director of International Cooperation & Exchange Office introduced to Ms. Wang and Prof. Guo the our university’s cooperation and exchanges with universities in Canada, and expressed her appreciation to Canadian Embassy and ACSC for their support given to the university. At 6 P.M. Prof. Xue Chengming, Vice President of the University invited the group to dinner. ACSC holds a biennial conference every two years, which is an international academic symposium of high standard. It is usually held in a well-known Chinese university. It is the first time that a new local university as Nanjing University of Finance and Economics is to hold it. This shows that ACSC thinks much of the ability for Canadian studies in our university and its increasingly academic influence in China. On behalf of the university Vice-President Xue indicates that they will help to make a good job of the Conference by all means and give great supports to Canadian studies so as to make it an important field in the subject construction of the university. He also wants the Canadian Studies Centre to become an important channel through which our university can carry out more international cooperation and exchanges and expand its academic status at home and abroad. 2. 上海交通大学举办“拥抱北京，走向温哥华”英语演讲比赛（Shanghai Jiao Tong University Organized the English Speech Contest: Development through the Sports: Canada and China）
第29届奥运会将于2008年在中国北京举行，而在2010年加拿大温哥华也将举办第21届冬奥会和特奥会。两个有着友好往来历史的国家因奥运而更加紧密，上海交通大学的师生们为此而感到欢欣鼓舞。为了进一步加深两国人民之间的相互了解，进一步紧密我们上海交通大学和加拿大高等院校和研究机构的协作联系，我们交大外国语学院和上海交通大学加拿大研究中心主办联合主编题为“拥抱北京，走向温哥华”的英语演讲比赛。 此次比赛从一月十日持续至二月二十八日。在过去的数个星期里，来自各院系同学的投稿报名，专业包括了英语，日语，德语，计算机科学与技术，经济学，物理学等等。从中选出了20名选手参加初赛，然后通过进一步面试确定了10名选手参加决赛。 决赛在2月28日上海交通大学闵行校区逸夫楼举行。本比赛引起上海交大校方和在华加拿大友好人士的重视。上海交大叶取源常务副校长亲临会场并作了讲话。加拿大驻沪总领事葛珊淑女士不仅亲自到会，而且还为演讲比赛担任评委会的主席。所有的参赛者用流利的英语表达了对奥运体育精神的深情热爱和对发展中加二国人民的强烈愿望。经过二个小时的紧张角逐，最后决出一等奖1名，二等奖2名，三等奖3名。第一名是交大外国语学院英语专业三年级的杨之曼同学。加拿大总领事葛珊淑在为头奖获得者颁布奖状时宣布，第一名将代表上海交大到北京外国语大学参加最后的总决赛，她如果在最后总决赛胜出的话，她将获得加拿大政府的5000加元的奖金，去加拿大的温哥华旅游一周。到会的师生衷心祝杨之曼同学好运! The 29th Summer Olympics will be held in Beijing China while the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games to be held in Vancouver in the year of 2010. The faculty and students of Shanghai Jiao Tong University are rejoiced that China and Canada, which have a long standing history of friendly relations, will be bonded even more closely because of the two Olympic events. To further promote the understanding and friendship between the peoples of the two countries and strengthen the ties for co-operation between Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Foreign Language School of SJTU and the SJTU Canadian Study Centre have organized the English Speech Contest: Development through the Sports: Canada and China. The speech contest lasted from January 10 to February 28, 2008. In the past several weeks, many students have registered in this competition and the organizers have collected articles not only from English department, but also from students who major in Japanese, Germany, Computer Science and Technology, Economics, Physics and so on. Out of these would-be participants the best 20 have been selected as the first round candidates, and then after interviewing the 20 candidates, the organizers have selected the best 10 as the final round contestants. The final was held in Yifu Building, Shanghai Jiao Tong University Ming Huang campus on Feb. 26. This speech even attracted great attention from both leaders of Jiao Tong University and Canadian friends in China. Deputy President of SJTU Yi Queyuan attended and addressed the gathering. Consul General of Shanghai Canadian Consulate Ms Susan Gregson not only arrived in person, but also acted as chair of the panel of judges. All the contestants，speaking in fluent English, expressed their vehement passion for the Olympic sportsmanship and a strong desire to develop friendship with Canadian people. After two hours’ keen competition, 1 first prize winner, 2 second prizes and 3 third prizes were awarded. The first prize winner was Miss Yang Zhiman, a third-year English major of the School of Foreign Languages School. In presenting the first prize to Miss Yang, Susan Gregson announced that Miss Yang will represent Shanghai Jiao Tong University to go to Beijing Foreign Studies University to enter the final of the finals. If she should emerge victorious, she would be able to receive 5000 Canadian dollars from the Canadian government to spend a week in Vancouver. 2008年3月14日下午，加拿大新生代实力派作家Madeleine Thien 女士应上海国际文学节之邀，来到了上海交通大学，以她最新作品《Certainty》为议题与来自上海交通大学的老师和同学们进行了一次有关“寻找定义”的对话。Madeleine Thien 女士向大家介绍了她的个人经历和她小说中所描述的战后生活、人性的勇敢及人生不断寻求的定义，并就加拿大文学、多元化社会等话题与在场的师生进行了广泛的讨论。本次讲座由上海交通大学加拿大研究中心、上海交通大学人文学院、以及加拿大驻沪总领事馆携手举办，加拿大驻沪总领事馆文化领事James Mitchell先生出席了讲座。（上海通大加拿大研究中心供稿）
On the afternoon of March 14, 2008, the noted New-generation Canadian novelist Ms. Madelein Thien visited Shanghai Jiao Tong University and conducted a dialogue on “quest for definitions” with the faculty and students of the university during the reading session of her newly-published novel “In Search of Certainty” as a part of the International Literature Festival held in Shanghai. Thien elaborated the myriad themes of the novel such as the people’s brave-do and their continuous quest for meaning in life during the post-WWII period. She also talked about her own life experience and exchanged views with her audience on a variety of issues such as Canadian literature and the diversity of culture. This event was co-organized by the Canadian Studies Center and School of Humanities of Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
