(The Chinese Version of Chain Fiction Write Across Canada: Mapping the Country in 19 Chapters Collectively Written by 19 Celebrated Canadian Writers was Published by Beijing Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press )

The Chinese version of the chain fiction Write Across Canada: Mapping the Country in 19 Chapters, organized by the Ottawa International Writers Festival, and collectively written by Michael Winter and 18 other celebrated Canadian writers, came out in 2007. Recommended by and with assistance of the Canadian Embassy in Beijing and translated by Dr. Ding Linpeng of Peking University, this innovative fiction is Canada’s first cross-country novel. The narrative follows a man and a woman’s road trip as it heads westward from Newfoundland. Each writer has a declared 48 hours and 600-word maximum to host the fictional couple in their local community. Encompassing 19 writers altogether, ten provinces and two territories, Write Across Canada is a landmark fictional journey across the cultural and geographical diversity of the nation.
Rachael Bedlington, former Counsellor of Public Affairs of the Canadian Embassy in Beijing, highly recommends this book::
“You are holding in your hands an example of an extremely innovative form of fiction – that of “chain fiction”. Crafted with the contributions of nineteen of Canada’s top storytellers, this tale takes the reader across Canada on a thought-provoking journey of discovery, travelling through varied landscapes of emotion, physical geography and experience.
The reader is invited to learn not just about the tangible, beautiful Canada, but to engage with complex abstract issues connected to cultural identity, gender, regional isolation, addiction and personal taste. I believe that Write Across Canada will not only provide enjoyment to readers, but also give them a unique perspective on Canada and Canadian contemporary literature.”
