On their visit, the Toppings kindly picked their way to Sichuan International Studies University (SISU) to deliver a specially prepared lecture on the Diplomatic Stories of the Ronning Family and China for the longing audience in SISU. This exciting occasion was generally granted from the speaker and the Consulate, and conducted by several functioning bodies in SISU:the Youth League Committee, the Center for Canadian Studies, the Foreign Affair Office, and the Students’ Canadian Association. On Nov. 30, 2007 when the occasion took place in SISU, Prof. Li Keyong, the President of SISU and the Director of the Center for Canadian Studies, Shawn P. Steil, Consul of Canada, Chongqing, Dr. Peter Liao, Director of Cultural and Education Section, Canadian Consulate Chongqing came to the presence and addressed the audience respectively. Prof. Zhang Zeminm, Director of the Foreign Affairs Office presided the lecture which won both the applauds and the hearts of the audience on the accounts of the fame of the Ronning family and the informative profoundness of the lecture itself. Students from as many as 7 universities in Chongqing flocked to the lecture and the Lecture Hall was filled with blooming young faces and their cheers and appreciations, which were recognized as unprecedented in recent years in SISU.In her lecture, Audrey Ronning Topping, the daughter of Mr. Chester Ronning, told in very details the historical stories of the family, and their long friendly ties with China and Chinese people. The many cherished photos of historical weights and the wit loaded words from Mrs. Tooping won waves after waves of applauds and appraisals. Dr. Liao from the Cultural and Education Section, Canadian Consulate Chongqing further impressed the audience with his accounting of the unusual contributions the Family made in the diplomatic history of the two countries. President Li intended the good will of SISU with a souvenir plate inscribed in Chinese characters of “Sichuan International Studies University” at the end of the lecture, and in return Mrs. Topping presented Li a signed copy of the Book, A Memo of China in Revolution: from the Boxer Rebellion to the People’s Republic. The Ronning Family’s visit to SISU was a symbol of renewal and spread of friendship between the Family and China; as President Li said at the closing that everyone present would be a dandelion of friendship, so the Sino-Canadian friendly relation will continue to take roots in the hearts of the two people, disseminating and developing ever.
