The group departed Beijing for Canada on May 28, 2007 to  undertake 5 weeks of  research in Canada in their respective areas of study.  After  their return to China,  SACS scholars are expected to publish scholarly articles or  books on issues of importance to Canada or  to teach courses on Canada so as to  further  research in key areas and to promote bilateral academic relations  between Canada  and China.       Congratulations to the following recipients:  1. Yang Hong, Hainan University  　=>2. 加拿大里贾那大学16人代表团访问中国社科院民族所（University of Regina Scholars Visited IEA/CASS）           2007年5月8日，加拿大里贾那大学（University of Regina）代表团一行16人,应邀到中国社会科学院民族学与人类学研究所访问，并围绕中国与加拿大的社会经济情况召开了座谈会。代表团团长为里贾那大学研究生院副院长茹东燕（Dongyan Blachford）博士，副团长为里贾那大学历史系副教授菲利普·查理艾（Philip Charrier）博士。随行的还有来自该校的大学生14名，其中女生9人，男生5人，分别来自里贾那大学的3个学院的6个系。中国社科院民族所科研处处长邸永君博士出席座谈会，代表社科院民族所欢迎里贾那大学师生来访，他向来宾简要介绍了民族所的科研工作，并介绍了中国历史和文化概况。民族所参加座谈会的主要人员有：中国加拿大研究会原会长、著名社会人类学家阮西湖教授，社科院民族所加拿大研究中心副主任周庆生教授，国际人类学民族学2008年世界大会筹委会副秘书长张继焦教授，影视人类学研究室助理教授张小敏，中国加拿大研究会副秘书长杜发春。里贾那大学一行16人中，只有3人曾来过中国，菲利普·查理艾教授也是第一次来京。代表团此行的主要目的就是了解中国，感受中国。大家抑制不住初到北京的喜悦和好奇，向社科院民族所专家们提出了许多有关中国的问题。80岁高龄的阮西湖教授精神抖擞地出席了座谈会，他根据7次到加拿大访问和研究的经历，从中国与加拿大的对比角度，向加拿大来宾详细介绍了中国少数民族的主要情况，并回答了同学们有关中国的民族政策、文化保护等方面的问题。张小敏则从中国第一个影视人类学影片产生的角度回答了有关中国民族文化保护。周庆生教授向客人介绍了中国的语言政策和使用情况。张继焦和杜发春则主要回答了同学们提出的有关环境保护、人口流动、农村经济发展等方面的问题，张继焦博士还向里贾那大学师生简要介绍了国际人类学民族学2008年世界大会的筹备情况。社科院民族所的专家也向加拿大来宾提出了一些关于加拿大教育和文化方面的问题。茹东燕教授介绍了里贾那大学的基本情况。该校为加拿大正规公立大学，2005年《麦克林》（MacLean’s）杂志综合类大学排名全加第6。该校位于加拿大中部的萨斯咯彻温省(Saskatchewan)省会里贾那市（Regina，人口20万），1974年建校，提供各类本科、硕士及博士学位，目前在校学生数12,000人。学校的特色专业有：新闻、媒体制作和研究、精算、石油工程、政策研究、健康研究等。茹东燕教授表示，希望加强与中国社会科学院在多元文化、土著民族、现代化与发展等方面的合作，开展科研及学术交流。茹东燕博士出生于北京，已移居加拿大20余年，原任里贾那大学文学院副院长，2007年1月始任研究生院副院长，国际语言系副教授。她的主要研究领域为：语言政策和教育，社会公平和性别问题等。代表团副团长里贾那大学历史系副教授菲利普·查理艾，英国剑桥大学历史系博士，主要研究领域是：当代东亚历史，现代化与发展，可视文化。通过面对面的互动交流，里贾那大学师生得到了一次较好了解中国文化和社会经济状况的机会，也加深了中加双方之间的相互了解。自20世纪80年代中期阮西湖教授首访里贾那大学以来，中国社科院民族所又有周庆生、彭雪芳和杜发春先后访问过里贾那大学，双方已建立了良好的合作关系。此次里贾那大学16人的代表团来访，加强和巩固了双方的学术联系。照片见附件。（杜发春供稿）On May 8th of 2007, A Delegation of 16 people from University of Regina (U of R) Canada visited the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, Chinese Academic of Social Sciences (IEA/CASS). The head of this delegation is Dr. Dongyan Blachford, Associate Dean of Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research, U of R. There are 16 visitors, including Dr. Philip Charrier, Associate Professor of History Department, and 14 undergraduate students who come from 6 different Departments of 2 Faculties, U of R. Dr. Di Yongjun, Director of Research Organizing Department of IEA/CASS, welcomed the Canadian delegation. Professor Ruan Xihu; the former President of the Association of Canadian Studies in China, Professor Zhou Qingsheng; the Director of Canadian Studies Research Centre of IEA/CASS, Dr. Zhang Jijiao, Zhang Xiaomin and Du Fachun from IEA/ CASS attended this meeting. A seminar on Cultural and Social-Economic Situation in China and Canada has been held during this visit, which provided a platform for discussion of mutual interests. This visit has strengthened the linkage between IEA/CASS and U of R. In the meanwhile, the exchange programs of scholars and/or students will be set up. Dr. Dongyan Blachford’s areas of research include language policy and education, technology in teaching, social justice and gender issues. She is a member of the Board of the Immigrant Women of Saskatchewan, Regina Chapter. Dr. Philip Charrier got his Ph.D from Cambridge University UK, his specialization now focuses on Modern East Asian history; modernization and development; visual culture.       The University of Regina formally founded in 1974, located in Saskatchewan. Currently, it has 9 faculties and 25 academic departments, which have established reputations for excellence and innovative programs leading to bachelors’, masters’, and doctoral degrees. There are more than 12,000 full-time and part-time students, 1,400 permanent and term employees and approximately 1,200 casual employees in U of R. Please see the attached photos. (Written by Du Fachun)  　=>3. 不列颠哥伦比亚大学詹森教授到社科院、北外和清华作学术讲座 (Dr. Graham Johnson from UBC Visited CASS, BFSU and Tsinghua U.)      应中国社会科学院的邀请，2007年5月27－31日，加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚大学（University of British Columbia ,UBC)）人类学与社会学系教授詹森（Graham Johnson）博士到北京访问，为中国社科院民族所、北京外国语大学、清华大学的师生做了三场学术讲座并进行了交流。詹森教授在北京访问期间，中国社会科学院国际合作局副局长张友云教授，中国人民大学人类学研究所所长、博士生导师庄孔韶教授分别会见并宴请了詹森博士。在清华大学，詹森教授作了“侨乡移民港口与北美的联系：跨越三个世纪的变迁—以广东台山端芬乡为例”的演讲。演讲会由清华大学人文学院教授、博士生导师龙登高先生主持。来自中国科学院地理研究所的陈秀荣教授、国务院侨务办公室的李爱慧博士以及清华大学的研究生参加了座谈。受北京外国语大学加拿大研究中心主任龚燕教授的委托，王文丽老师邀请詹森教授到北外作了“从加拿大华人看加拿大的多元文化”的讲座。来自北外加拿大研究中心、加拿大俱乐部、英语学院等院系的师生共20余人聆听了詹森教授的讲座并相互进行了交流。另外，来自澳大利亚的访问学者安·安琪儿（Ann Angles）博士也参加了讨论。在中国社科院民族所，詹森教授与该所加拿大研究中心的学者围绕“加拿大移民和华人研究”进行了座谈。参加座谈的有：社科院民族所加拿大研究中心副主任、博士生导师周庆生教授，中国社会科学院海外华人研究中心秘书长曾少聪教授，以及民族所加拿大研究中心的姜德顺、石茂明、丁赛、张小敏、高建平、杜发春等。詹森教授被人称作加拿大的“中国通”，他颇具语言天赋，除了能讲英语和法语外，他还能说一口流利的粤语、普通话并通晓客家话。其主要研究领域为中国珠江三角洲的经济社会转型、东南亚侨乡移民与北美的关系、加拿大华人研究等。1971年，詹森第一次来到中国广东，开始了他的“广东之旅”，30多年来，他的足迹遍布几乎所有中国主要城市。詹森教授的妻子罗碧诗（Elizabeth L. Johnson）博士现为UBC大学的人类学博物馆馆长。中国加拿大研究会副秘书长杜发春全程陪同詹森教授到社科院、北外和清华等校访问。杜发春还宴请了UBC大学人类学系主任大卫·普科提罗（David Pokotylo）教授，以及多伦多莱尔森大学林小华（Howard Lin）教授一行。杜发春向客人介绍了2008年国际人类学民族学世界大会（IUAES 2008）的筹备情况，拟请普科提罗教授主持一个考古人类学的专题会议。IUAES 2008定于2008年7月15－23日在中国昆明召开，主题是“人类、发展和文化多样性”，会议规模预计为5000人，其中来自加拿大的学者预计将超过100人。普科提罗教授是应中国社会科学院考古研究所的邀请来华进行学术访问的。照片见附件。（杜发春供稿）On May 27th-31st of 2007, invited by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Dr. Graham Johnson from the University of British Columbia (UBC) delivered three lectures/presentations in CASS, Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU) and Tsinghua University. Besides, Professor Zhang You-yun, the Vice-Director of the International Cooperation Bureau at CASS, and Professor Zhuang Kong-shao, the Director of the Institute of Anthropology at China Renming University etc. welcomed Professor Johnson’ s visit.  The topic of Dr. Johnson’s presentation in Tsinghua University is Chinese in Canada: A Case Study of Duanfen 150 Years on Transformation of a Qiaoxiang, which described the changes that have occurred in Duanfen Township, located in the southern portion of Taishan in the western region of the Pearl River delta region of Gangdong province. Taishan as a whole has been a major centre of out migration for more than 150 years. Its migrants were gold-miners in the United States, Canada and Australia. Their links with Canada are especially important. They were the crucial elements in completing the railway that was critical for the emergence of Canada as a modern political entity. Dr. Johnson examined what has happened in the Chinese homeland and how its links abroad have both helped and hindered its development. Further, the presentation focused in part on the architectural environment that links Duanfen, Taishan City, Guangzhou with Vancouver. This presentation organized by Professor Long Deng-gao from the school of Social Sciences at Tsinghua U. and attendees of this meeting came mainly from the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Oversea Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council of PRC, and Tsinghua U..      Organized by Professor Wang Wen-li from the Canadian Studies Center at BFSU, Dr. Johnson’s presentation titled Cultural Diversity in Canada from the perspective of Chinese Immigration. There were 16 teachers and students from BFSU attended this lecture, including Dr. Ann Angles who is a visiting scholar in BFSU from Australia.     A roundtable discussion has been held in CASS, which focused on Immigration and Chinese Canadian. Dr. Johnson introduced very detailed information about the Chinese in Canada, involves their history of migration, suffering of discrimination, contributions to Canadian development, and its current situation in Canada. There were 8 Professors from CASS attended this roundtable discussion: Zhou Qing-sheng, Zeng Shao-cong, Jiang De-shun, Shi Mao-min, Ding Sai, Zhang Xiao-min, Gao Jian-ping, and Du Fa-chun.      Graham Johnson is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology at UBC. Dr. Johnson works primarily on the economic and social transformation of the Pearl River delta region, Guangdong province, south China, migration into the region, and the integration of Hong Kong into southern China. He also has research interests in the areas of food security in China and the impact of transport infrastructure in Guangdong, Gansu and Shanghai. Dr. Johnson maintains a standing interest in the changing New Territories of Hong Kong, especially Tsuen Wan, and Chinese-Canadian Communities in Canada. Dr. Johnson is languages expert who can speak English, French, Chinese mandarin, Cantonese, and Hakka. In May of 2007, Dr. Johnson came with Dr. Henry Yu and 15 UBC students on a unique summer class to Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia that examined Chinese migrations in global context.
