1. 中国加拿大研究会第十二届年会情况通报 (Briefings of the 12th ACSC Biennial Conference) The 12th ACSC conference was successfully held in the Shao Yi Fu Science Hall in Shandong University from Nov. 10-12th. The conference was generously supported by the DeFait (through the Canadian embassy) and Shandong University, and jointly hosted by the Canadian Studies Center and the Foreign Languages School of SDU. The event drew wide attention from various sectors. The vice-President of SDU, Mr. Chen Yan, made welcoming remarks at the opening ceremony. In addition, Ms Jing Wei, the Director of Section of America and Oceania of the Division of International cooperation in the Education Ministry of China congratulated on the conference, Mr. Chris Greenfields, Director of International Education and Youth of DeFait of Canada gave a congratulatory speech on behalf of Canada. The President of ACSC, Prof. Han Jing Lun, kicked off the opening ceremony. In his opening speech he reaffirmed the contribution of various centers in China to Canadian studies and spoke highly of the work done by the ACSC Secretariat. Altogether 93 delegates and individuals from over 30 institutions in China attended the conference, 87 papers were submitted, covering various topics and fields such as public policy, environment protection, economic development, China-Canada trade, multiculturalism policy, Chinese immigrants, Canadian literature and language teaching, Canadian history, politics, diplomatic relations, etc. All the delegates exchanged ideas and opinions in five discussion groups. In order to raise the research quality of Canadian Studies in China, seven Canadian scholars were invited to the conference, who represented the top-notch or the first-class cohort of Canadian scholars in the fields of public policy, environment protection, Indigenous peoples and history, respectively. They and other seven Chinese scholars made the keynote speeches, which were very well received by the audience. They also joined in the penal discussions, and consequently, the interactions bore fruits. During the conference, ACSC held its plenary meeting of the directors council, which amended and passed the new “ACSC Charter.” Based on the nomination of 11th Standing Council, new members were elected into the 12th Standing Council, which in turn elected the new president and vice presidents. The new president, after consulted with the Standing Council, nominated the members for the new Secretariat of ACSC. In order to upgrade and expand Canadian studies research in China, a roundtable was organized during the conference, attended by directors of various centers or their representatives. Ms Wang Li, the project official from Canadian Embassy, made some important remarks on her expectations of future Canadian studies in China , while some delegates from a number of centers shared their respective views on how to improve our work and strengthen collaboration among and between centers across the country. Going on side by side with the conference were various activities of “Canada Week” on campus, such as Canadian Books Fair, English Speech Contest on Knowledge of Canada, Canadian movie show, Canadian scholars’ lectures, and so on. These activities greatly interested scholars from home and abroad and tremendously increased the visibility of Canada in China. After the conference, delegates from China and Canada conducted a cultural tour in Confucius’s home, which sharpened their understanding of Chinese traditional culture.
