EUROPEAN SEMINAR FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS IN CANADIAN STUDIES -- CALL FOR PAPERS
The 19th European Seminar for Graduate Students in Canadian Studies will be hosted by the Department of History of the University of Milano, Italy, September 23-24, 2010.  Any students at European universities working on Master’s or doctoral theses in Canadian Studies are invited to share their current research in the form of an oral presentation before a panel of experts and fellow students. Contributions from all disciplines are welcome. Contributions may be in either English or French, and should not exceed 15-20 minutes. A selection of the best papers will be published after the conference. Students interested in participating should submit an abstract (1 page) outlining the topic of their research and the nature of their findings, plus a short C.V. Applications may be submitted by e-mail. Papers will be selected on the basis of the abstract. Invitations to participate will be sent out as soon as the selection process has been completed. Deadline for abstracts: June 15, 2010. Accommodation and meals will be covered by a grant from the Government of Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to the European Network for Canadian Studies. The German Canadian Studies Research Scholarship (M.A.) is awarded on an annual basis for the most promising Master’s thesis project on any aspect in the field of German-Canadian Studies. 2010-2011 JEAN-CLÉO-GODIN AWARD – CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
The Jean-Cléo-Godin Award (previously Cétuq Award) is granted each year to a student at the Masters or PhD level from outside of Quebec whose research is concentrating on Quebec literature. This award worth $7,000 will allow the recipient to assume the costs of a minimum three month stay at the CRILCQ/Université de Montreal, to pursue his or her research and benefit from all the activities (courses, seminars, colloquiums, conferences, etc.) related to Quebec literature. The Centre de recherche interuniversitaire sur la littérature et la culture québécoises (CRILCQ) offers this postdoctoral award for 2010-2011 worth $20,000. The award is designed for PhD students who successfully defended their thesis. It will allow the recipient to assume the cost of a stay at the CRILCQ/Université de Montréal for furthering his or her research on Quebec literature and culture. ANNOUNCING: STORIES MATTER, V. 1.5.1
This new media application offers oral historians an alternative to transcription and can be accessed at http://storytelling.concordia.ca/storiesmatter. The second phase in the development of an easy-to-use open source oral history database software called “Stories Matter” is now completed. In phase I (completed in May 2009), oral historians could download the software and build oral history databases on their local computers. In phase II (completed in January 2010), the database is now online allowing the merger of databases and remote access. CRIMINALIZATION OF DISSENT COLLECTION – CALL FOR CONTRIBUTION
Completed chapters are sought for a significant collection on the criminalization of political movements and dissent in the contemporary context. The criminalization of dissent has been a common feature of neo-liberal governance in the current period of capitalist globalization. It has accompanied various structural adjustment and free trade policies as the required force to impose such programs on unwilling publics. SOCIAL SCIENCE ON THE FINAL FRONTIER – CALL FOR PAPERS
Migrations: The Laurentian Association for Science Fiction is pleased to invite paper proposals for a conference on science fiction and society. The event will be held from August 23rd to 25th, 2010, at Laurentian University, Ontario. As a genre, science fiction entails implicit or explicit assumptions about social ontology, societal values, norms and traditions, the operation of power, the production, distribution and consumption of goods, the motors of social change, and the nature of social laws. The organizers are especially (but by no means exclusively) interested in paper proposals that address the “Canadian dimension” of science fiction, internal colonialism, the relationship between frontier and utopia, or the nature of resource extraction societies. GENDER CODES – CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
The next Canadian Initiative in Law Culture and the Humanities (CILCH) workshop will be held from October 22nd to 24th, 2010, in Ottawa, Ontario under the theme of gender. This workshop is designed to explore how gender is and has been constructed, deconstructed, performed, codified, encoded, decoded, played with, inscribed, transformed or rejected in and by law, culture and the humanities. The workshop will draw upon a wide variety of approaches to gender(s) and related issues and questions – feminist, queer, masculinity studies, post structuralist, historical, and critical race approaches. MASTER CLASSES ON HUMAN RIGHTS – CALL FOR APPLICATIONS
As host university for Congress 2010 Concordia is sponsoring a day of Graduate Master Classes on the theme of Human Rights on Saturday, May 29. Nous invitons tout étudiant ou toute étudiante d’une université européenne, en cycle de maîtrise ou de doctorat , à exposer ses recherches, sous la forme d’un projet de recherche, à l’attention d’experts invités et d’autres étudiants. Nous serons heureux de recevoir toute contribution de chaque discipline. Les projets seront présentés sous la forme d’une communication, en français ou en anglais, d’une durée de 15-20 minutes. Une sélection des meilleurs exposés sera publiée après le séminaire. Nous vous invitons à soumettre, par courriel un résumé (1 page) du thème de votre recherche, avec conclusions, ainsi qu’un bref CV. La sélection des projets de recherche sera effectuée sur la base des résumés. Les invitations seront envoyées le plut tôt possible après la sélection. Date limite: 15 juin 2010. INTRODUCTION DE STORIES MATTER, V. 1.5.1
Cette nouvelle application média offre aux spécialistes de l’histoire orale une alternative aux transcriptions et est accessible à partir du site Web http://storytelling.concordia.ca/storiesmatter. La deuxième phase dans le développement d’une base de données en histoire orale à code ouvert appelée « Stories Matter » est maintenant achevée. Dans la phase I, complétée en mai 2009, les spécialistes de l’histoire orale pouvaient télécharger le logiciel et construire des bases de données en histoire orale dans leurs propres ordinateurs. Dans la phase II, complétée en janvier 2010, la base de données est maintenant offerte en ligne, ce qui permet de fusionner les bases de données et d’y accéder à distance. « CRIMINALIZATION OF DISSENT COLLECTION » – APPEL À CONTRIBUTION
On recherche des chapitres complets en vue d’une importante collection portant sur la criminalisation des mouvements politiques et de la dissidence dans un contexte contemporain. La criminalisation de la dissidence représente un lieu commun de la gouvernance néo-libérale du monde actuel. Elle a accompagné divers ajustements structurels et des politiques de libre-échange comme mesure destinée à imposer ces programmes à des publics qui leur étaient réfractaires. Les contributions peuvent aborder la criminalisation de la dissidence dans n’importe quel contexte national ou peuvent se concentrer sur des analyses comparatives.
