In 1938 when World War Two continued, Peking University, Tsinghua University and Nankai University, the top three Chinese institutions of higher learning, were forced to move to Kunming and formed the National Southwest Affiliated University (NSAU). NSAU was considered as the most prestigious and largest university in China at the time where a large number of top Chinese scientists and scholars were educated. When the war came to an end, Peking University, Tsinghua and Kankai moved back to Beijing and Tianjiang while the Teachers College of NSAU remained in Kunming. The Teachers College of NSAU was the predecessor to Yunnan Normal University (YNNU). With YNNU contributes significantly to    Canadian Studies President Yang Lin  appointed the  growth and development of the Chinese  education.           Prof. David LumsdenResearch Chair

YNNU is seriously committed to internationalization and has become the most partners for Canada in Yunnan’s education sector. YNNU created a Canadian Studies Centre in its effort to strengthen the university’s cooperation and exchange with Canada. YNNU President Yang Lin and Vice President International Yuan Yichuan respectively serve as the Director and Managing Director this Centre. In Oct 2008, President Yang Lin, Vice Governor Luo Lihui, Vice Consul Ryan Baerg, Prof. Seymour Topping and Dr. Audrey Ronning Topping jointly unveiled the plaque for the Canadian Studies Centre. Prof. Topping is a Distinguished Professor in International Journalism at the Columbia University in New York. He served 10 years as the Managing Editor of the New York Times and 10 years as the Administrator of the Pulitzer Prizes. Prof. Topping currently serves as the President of the International Advisory Board for the Tsinghua School of Journalism. The Centre works closely with the Canadian Consulate in Chongqing, Canadian Embassy in Beijing, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada as well as the Association for Canadian Studies in China. YNNU allocates an operating budget of RMB 70,000 to the Centre in support of its research activities.
